Since 2009

Seventeen years of picking the good stuff.

Mane is a one-person point of view on the rack. The taste is the reason to come in, and it has been the same hands doing the choosing the whole way through.

The shop

A corner worth standing on.

Mike Galvin grew up in the Mount. He opened Mane in 2009 on the corner of Prince Avenue and Maunganui Road, because the area had almost nowhere to buy decent menswear at the time.

He replaced a traditional menswear store with designer labels from Europe, the UK and New Zealand, and he has been doing the buying himself ever since. Seventeen years on, the shop is known for two things: the stock you cannot get elsewhere, and the time taken to help you find the right thing.

The buying

The trip is the work.

The reason the rack looks different here is that Mike goes and finds it. Direct imports from Germany, France and Turkey sit next to labels like Deeluxe and Mauritius Leather Jackets.

He buys small. Often a single size run. That is a deliberate choice, not a limitation. It means the floor is always moving, and it means the piece you like is usually the only one of its kind in the country.

The edit changes with every buying trip. The best of it is on the floor, and the rest is a conversation away.
